Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – WEEE Regulation
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) came into force in January 2007 The WEEE Directive aims to both reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being produced and to encourage everyone to reuse, recycle and recover it. The WEEE Directive also aims to improve the environmental performance of businesses that manufacture, supply, use, recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment.

SMART Medical is committed to these directives and by constantly reviewing company policies and procedures and working closely with original equipment manufacturers. Thereby ensuring that all waste generated is kept to an absolute minimum and where possible is recycled or disposed of in a responsible manner that complies with all Government guidelines and statutory obligations.

SMART Medical also work closely with the public actively encouraging them and helping them in the correct recycling procedures of their old electrical electronic equipment.

Advice to the Public

The public should no longer throw their old electrical electronic products into the normal refuse bins but should separate the items and either take them for recycling to an authorised recycling centre or return them to retailers.

Products sold by SMART Medical that are covered by the WEEE directive are clearly marked with a crossed out wheelie bin symbol similar to the one below.

This symbol is placed on products to remind users not to dispose of the item in a normal wheelie bin whose contents will eventually end up as landfill.

To support the environment SMART Medical will take back your old equipment when you purchase a similar new product from us. This take-back scheme is on a one-for-one basis only and the new product purchased must be of an equivalent type, or perform the same function, as your old product. This take-back scheme only relates to products used in private households.

When your old products are received at SMART Medical we will arrange for it to be recycled through an Approved Authorised Recycling Facilities at no cost to the end user. What is the impact of electrical and electronic waste? We throw away a million tonnes of household electrical and electronic waste every year in the UK. At least as much comes from non-household sources such as offices, factories, schools and hospitals.
Electrical and electronic equipment plays an ever increasing role in our daily lives.
Our kitchen appliances, mobile phones and computers offer us many benefits during their working lives but when this equipment is thrown away it affects the environment.
Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK and the EU. Some WEEE contains hazardous substances and parts such as mercury in some switches, lead in solder and cadmium in batteries, all of which are extremely dangerous to the environment if not disposed of in a proper manner. Recycling rates for most types of WEEE (other than large white goods – like fridges and washing machines) are very low. What is the scope of the WEEE Directive? The WEEE Directive covers a wide range of electrical and electronic products, although some are exempt from certain requirements. The types of products covered are:

  • large and small household appliances
  • IT and telecommunication equipment
  • consumer equipment such as TVs, videos, hi-fi
  • lighting, electrical and electronic tools (except large stationary industrial tools)
  • toys, leisure and sports equipment
  • automatic dispensers
  • medical devices (these are exempt from the WEEE recycling and recovery targets)
  • monitoring and control instruments

Where can I read the full UK WEEE Regulation? The Directive is implemented in the UK through two sets of regulations. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006, which implements most aspects of the WEEE Directive in the UK, came into force on 2 January 2007. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (Waste Management Licensing) (England and Wales) Regulations 2006 came into force on 5 January 2007. These Regulations cover England and Wales and deal with the site licensing requirements and WEEE treatment requirements of the WEEE Directive. Similar but separate legislation will be introduced in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Further information in respect of WEEE regulations can be obtained from the following organisations:
